Rambaran geldings swept the $18,000 opening leg of the Ontario Boys Pacing Series for four-year-olds at Woodbine, as Downhill Skier and Western Gem captured in their respective divisions in 1:52.4s!
Sent off as the marginal second choice at post time, Downhill Skier and driver Chris Christoforou captured the evenings first division with a 1:52.4 mile. The four-year-old Rambaran gelding, lowered his lifetime mark with the performance, winning his leg for owner Brad Gray, and trainer Joe Stutzman.
Taking a pocket ride as Lucky Brad went to the opening quarter in :27.3, Christoforou tipped Downhill Skier out just before Lucky Brad met the half in :57.1. Reaching the three-quarters pole in 1:24.3, Downhill Skier, came home with a :27.4 final panel. He now stands 2-0-1 in 5 starts this year and sports total earnings of $93,829!
With Luc Ouellette at his lines, Western Gem was a winner in the second split, as he also stopped the clock in a new lifetime best of 1:52.4s.
Western Gem sat third on the rail as Jiffy Popcorn (Mark MacDonald) went to the quarter-pole in :26.1. As Jiffy Popcorn met the half in :55.3, Western Gem was fifth, but was still third on the cones as the flow came calling. Out three-wide as Jiffy Popcorn reached the third call in 1:24, Western Gem went on to charge home through the lane to seal the deal.
Conditioned by Rene Bourassa for Alex Naudts, Ecuries El Senior Bino and Kim Bourassa, Western Gem now stands 1-0-2 in 5 starts this year. His total earnings lifetime are now $96,198!
We did use his speed a little bit at the gate to get around one horse and to get him spotted, Ouellette said of Western Gem... I guess we got a little bit lucky too. We got some decent fractions and he has a nice stretch finish.
Congratualtions and Good Luck In the Second Leg to Downhill Skier and Western Gem!
